Keenan Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 | Parker is floored by all the Keenan Wines!
95RP | The Keenan Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from their high-elevation vineyards on Spring Mountain) is the deepest, richest wine of the entire portfolio, with an opaque purple color and a super-pure nose of crème de cassis and blueberries. The wine is rich, full-bodied, nicely textured, and very long in the finish, with ripe tannins. Drink now or cellar for another 15 or more years.
Parker adds: It isn’t often that we meet with a winery to taste and we’re floored by every single wine they present. This happens maybe 3 times a year. Candidly, that’s what happens every year when Michael Keenan comes to visit.
93AG | The Keenan Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is an impeccably balanced wine that brings together firm mountain structure with ripe, unctuous fruit. Dark cherry, plum compote, spice, licorice, and menthol are some of the many notes that give the Reserve its mid-palate density and sweetness. The firm tannins need time to soften, but this is impressive juice.”–Antonio Galloni
From the Winery
2014 marks the 38th vintage for the Robert Keenan Winery and the 14th consecutive vintage of Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This year’s blend consists of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 15, and 19% Clone 7, both clones from our “Big K” vineyard, and 3% Cabernet Franc from our “Upper Bowl” vineyard. Deep aromatics, piercing and precise, a full rich saturated mouthfeel, and a long-lasting multi-layered finish define this exemplary blend. The 2014 Reserve Cabernet, comprised of fruit from 17-year-old vines, is showing new subtle layers of flavors that we saw even during fermentation. Enjoy now or decades from now. Cheers!
High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century. Then planting 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history.
But Robert was certain the mountaintop vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay. And then hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim.
