As with all of Matt’s wines, finish half the bottle and try it on day two, when it will blossom and reveal more layers of Old Vine spice and fruit complexity. If there’s any Three Wine Company Old Vines Field Blend 2015 left by day three, it will still impress.
Winery | Three Wine Company Old Vines Field Blend 2015 is a luscious combination of ancient-vine Carignane (39%), Mataro (26%), Zinfandel (17%) Petite Sirah (11%), Alicante Bouschet (5%), and Black Malvoisie (2%). Each of these varietals contributes to the deep purple/black color and piercing, high-toned aromas of boysenberry violets and dark plum. Massive on the attack, showing off all of its 100+ year-old-vine pedigree. Packed with crushed black fruits and black cherry liqueur, the finish remains firm and vibrant. Drink now (hard not to), or lay down for up to a decade. As with all these ancient-vine reds, oxygen is its friends.

Winemaker Matt Cline
When talking to winemaker Matt Cline, it’s tough to keep the conversation focused on one specific wine. That’s because Matt knows more about —and has done more with —sites that are so deeply woven into California’s long grape-growing history. So to tell the story of a bottling out of its historical context would be all but impossible.

Matt’s extravagant black-fruit reds are America’s best answer to the bargains of the southern Rhône. Try making the trip down to Oakley just to see these improbable ancient-vine plantings. Yet, you could fail to understand the history behind them. Rather, there are no signs or plaques to commemorate the hard work of the Portuguese and Italian immigrants. Most of all, these folks carved 6-inch budwood into Delhi sand on cold winter mornings creating the incredible vineyards. Enjoy their hard work in this Three Wine Company Old Vines Field Blend 2015.
