Jonata Fenix 2014 | Double 93 Point Elegance & Pleasure
Winery | “Crushed raspberry, fresh tobacco, peat, and smoke lead the way on this serious expression of merlot. Jonata Fenix 2014 is pretty and inviting on the nose. Then taut and structured with intense black plum and cedar on the palate. Expands and stretches with air to become both sweet and chewy. While plusher and round today than its cabernet counterparts. Elegance and pleasure” Matt Dees, Winemaker
More Ridiculously Great Red Blends
RP93+ | Composed of 54% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Jonata Fenix 2014 offers a medium garnet-purple color and nose of crushed black plums, blackberry compote and mulberries. In addition with hints of Chinese five spice, garrigue, rare beef and dried Mediterranean herbs. The medium-bodied palate struts a lot of showy black fruit and spicy layers. Most of all with velvety tannins and lovely freshness paving the long finish.
More Accolades
93 Vinous | Jonata Fenix 2014, Jonata’s Merlot-based blend is round, supple and inviting. Dark wild cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, licorice and dark spice notes infuse this creamy voluptuous red. While the tannins need time to soften. However, there is plenty to look forward to. Like all of the 2014s, the Fenix carries with it the struggle of a drought vintage.
92JD | Jonata Fenix 2014 is another ripe, polished wine that has classic varietal character. Its deep ruby color is followed by notes of black cherries, plums, damp earth and dark chocolate. While showing the 2014 charm. And medium to full-bodied, supple and elegant on the palate, with some tannin that has a bite on the finish. Give it a year or so and drink through 2024.
Winemaker Matt Dees
Since founding JONATA in 1999, the owners of Screaming Eagle have demonstrated the same commitment to the land in Ballard Canyon as they have in Oakville. From the outset, they spared no expense. Initially evaluating the potential for growing world-class wines, calling in an “A-Team” from France to conduct soil samples. After the report was produced, the proprietor pushed ahead with selecting 80 of the almost 600 acres for the planting of Rhône and Bordeaux varieties. When Matt Dees arrived in 2004 he took one look at the unique potential of JONATA’s sandy soil. Then another look at how much the owners had already poured into their Oakville winery. And of course, he then signed on the dotted line.
