Winemaker | With power, precision, elegance, and complexity, Fait Main Todeschini Asteria Vineyard 2016 is a modern wine born of ancient lands. And a testament to friendship and trust. “I’m not trying to make Napa in Bordeaux,” said Benoit, “but I wanted to show that wine from Bordeaux doesn’t have to be austere. While The wine can maintain the elegance that I love about Bordeaux. But with more seductive fruit intensity like I’m used to with grapes from Napa.”
Todeschini Asteria Vineyard 2016
Benoit’s Fait Main Todeschini Asteria Vineyard 2016 is grown on a limestone plateau on the Todeschini property that has been dedicated to viticulture for 500 years. Aged in 50 percent new French oak, this is a powerful, full-bodied expression of Right Bank Bordeaux. Notably seasoned with licorice, cedar spice, and graphite. Yet it is a wine from the most classic of regions. Most of all made by a 100-point New World master who has earned his place as a client favorite.
So this vineyard site has been growing grapes for more than 500 years. The Todeschini family owns and farms the estate today. While using sustainable methods that reject synthetic materials, insecticides, and herbicides. Then planting our vines on top of a unique plateau in the middle of the historic property. Yet the soils there are incredible. First asteria limestone layered on top of molasse rock. Then with oceans of ancient marine animal fossils trapped in the earth. Finally, the diversity of calcareous soil gives the fruit richness and density, with fine minerality at the core.
Winemaker Benoit Touquette
Benoit grew up in Lyon thinking he would become a fighter pilot or an engineer. While never considering wine until he was in Bordeaux working mobile bottling lines to pay for graduate school. However, the infectious passion of the winemakers he met, showing up day after day with the same fire in their eyes, blew him away. Then switching his focus to enology and completing two degrees. Finally leaving France to intern with Andy Erickson and explore uncharted possibilities in Napa Valley.
