Cornerstone Cellars Ram’s Horn Vineyard Syrah 2015 displays a purple-black color at the core with a light violet rim. While heady aromas of jasmine, pulverized rocks, asphalt, and crushed blackberries delight the senses. A full-bodied concentration that illustrates plenty of black and blue fruit seasoned with grilled rare steak and salumi. Tertiary notes of savory herbs, licorice, Turkish coffee, and black olive tapenade add another layer of complexity. Extremely expressive and open knit with 15 to 20 minutes of aeration in the glass. Most of all, Syrah lovers rejoice over this solid terroir driven effort. Drink now to 2022.
Dynamic Duo | Charles Thomas & Kari Auringer
Cornerstone Cellars Ram’s Horn Vineyard Syrah 2015 is the handiwork of Thomas and his winemaking partner at Cornerstone, Kari Auringer, whose own resume includes a 100-pointer. Their combined expertise makes them one of the most formidable winemaking duos in Napa, and the powerful 2015 vintage delivered a rich Syrah with opulent blackberry, cracked pepper, tar, violets, and silky tannins.
The Cornerstone team built its success on sourcing Cabernets from only the best vineyards, and their approach with this Syrah was no different. Together, they fashioned a masterpiece of Hermitage-like structure and New World plushness.
Ram’s Horn Vineyard
So the key lay in the selection of the Ram’s Horn Vineyard. First, rigorously dry-farmed and organically cultivated by a fifth-generation Mendocino family. Next, sitting on rocky soils looking out over the town of Hopland. While grapes sit above the fog line at roughly 1,800 feet in elevation. Finally, the vines bask in long, hot, sunny days and stiff breezes. While gathering savory black fruit power thanks to extended hangtime. In addition, cool evenings lock in acidity. Come harvest time, berries of the small clusters are tiny but packed with intensity and verve.
