Villa Creek Avenger 2015 | Gorgeous Double 95 point Paso Robles Syrah Blend
95WA | Villa Creek Avenger 2015 displays a youthful purple. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, cola, potpourri and incense, and an exotic Moroccan spice quality builds in the glass. Shows impressive depth as well as energy on the palate, offering densely packed blueberry, bitter cherry and candied violet flavors that become sweeter and livelier with air. Finishes sappy, youthfully tannic and extremely long, leaving behind suave mineral and lavender pastille notes.

95JD | The Villa Creek Avenger 2015 is a more Syrah dominated cuvée which includes 10% each of Petite Sirah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. Its deep ruby/purple/opaque color is followed by classic Paso Robles Syrah notes of blackberries, barbecue smoke, peppery herbs, and chalky minerality. Opening up with time in the glass, this full-bodied, unctuous beauty has sweet tannin, nicely integrated acidity, and loads of fruit and texture, all while staying balanced, clean and incredibly drinkable. It will benefit from a year or two in the bottle and keep through 2027.
Villa Creek Winery Notes
Avenger is the red blend that launched Villa Creek Cellars in 2001. Syrah from G2 Vineyard is the backbone of this wine. G2 is a stone’s throw from James Berry Vineyard in the Willow Creek district of the west hills of Paso Robles. The vines are deeply rooted in limestone which gives richness and complexity without being over the top. Our block at G2 sits on a steep windswept west-facing slope that benefits from ocean fog and cooler daytime temperatures. These conditions lend breadth on the palate and layers of flavor to the wines. Denner and Luna Matta Mourvèdre add a bass note of dark fruit. A touch of Rolph dry farmed Petite Syrah adds volume. This wine is all about hedonistic pleasure! Drink 2017-2027.
Proprietors Cris and JoAnn Cherry
We moved to Paso Robles in 1996 to open a restaurant. Then partaking in the burgeoning wine scene and raising our children in the country. In 2001 we purchased our first grapes to make wine for our restaurant. And so began Villa Creek Cellars, our best expression of west Paso Robles’ Rhone grape varieties. Later closing our restaurant in 2017. And now devoting the entirety of our blood, sweat, tears, and resources to our winery. In addition, developing Demeter certified biodynamic and Stellar certified organic vineyard in the hills west of Paso Robles.
Yet we continue to purchase grapes from our region’s most esteemed vineyards. Of course, always striving to create exciting wines that reflect the land from which they originated. In 2018 we will release our first all estate wines under a new label, MAHA Estate, to a select list of customers.
