WBOTD: Big, bold, will last – great intro to Flegenheimer
91 Points – Robert Parker | Flegenheimer Bros Reserve Red is a blend of Shiraz and Petite Sirah. The very deep purple-black colored 2012 Reserve Red Wine exudes aromas of warm blackberries and crushed black plums. Very big and full-bodied, with hints of mulberries, black pepper, tree bark and charcoal. It fills the palate with warm berry preserves flavors and just a touch of pepper. It finishes just a little hot, but is offset by chewy tannins and uplifting acidity.
Winemaker Notes | Sourced from Hammerschlag’s McLaren Vale vineyard. A great site for Shiraz, the vineyard is also planted with Petite Sirah. A varietal that is naturally higher in acid, tannin and color, thereby enhancing the wine’s mineral character and providing structure to the blend. Blend: 85% Shiraz, 15% Petite Sirah
Hammerschlag’s McLaren Vale vineyard consists of ironstone and clay over limestone and benefits from cool maritime breezes each afternoon. Upon securing this location, Hammerschlag got to work in the vineyard selecting 2 clones of Shiraz: 1654. This is very typical of South Australia and Tabhilk, sourced from the oldest winery in Victoria and more reminiscent of the northern Rhone. In addition to Shiraz, the vineyard is planted with Petite Sirah, a varietal that is naturally higher in acid, tannin and color. This enhances the wine’s mineral character and provides structure to the blend.
